Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens’ October installation of the Music & Mosaics Concert Series, “Dia De Los Muertos Dance Fiesta,” is held in honor of the Latin American Day of the Dead holiday. The audience can dance the night away to Conjunto Philadelphia, a live Cuban band that will perform Latin American music all night long! Self-conscience about your Latin moves? Not to fear! The first hour, starting promptly at 7:00 PM, will feature dance lessons from Society Hill Dance Academy. When you need a break from all of the dancing, feel free to grab a glass of complimentary sangria and view Ana Vizcarra Rankin’s beautiful site-specific installation throughout Isaiah Zagar’s mosaiced labyrinth. If sangria is not your style, feel free to bring your own beverage of choice and hurry on over to the dance floor to celebrate Dia De Los Muertos!
Admission is $15/Members and Students, $20/Non-Members. RSVP by calling 215-733-0390 or emailing lharkins@phillymagicgardens.org. See you there!
Society Hill Dance Academy(SHDA), founded by Director Shana Vitoff, has been serving the Center City area with both Latin and ballroom dance since 2002. Vitoff, who will be the evening’s instructor, has been dancing, teaching and competing for over 20 years. Her love of dance has also led her to establish the Philadelphia Dance Foundation, a non-profit organization which brings ballroom and Latin dance to children in the underserved inner-city schools. This event is a perfect way to start something you have always wanted to do; as Shana loves to say “do not wait until ‘someday’ to dance”! SHDA offers a variety of dance classes at their Center City and Manayunk locations, as well as special events each week in and outside their studios.

Ana Vizcarra Rankin, is a Uruguayan American artist with a voracious appetite for all things beautiful and fun. This installation, inspired by the international ritual of the ofrenda, or offering to the dead, will incorporate printed sugar skulls and other related imagery strewn about the gardens illuminated by a mix of metal leafing, candles, and bulbs. Rankin is a 2012 MFA candidate at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and received her BA in Art History Summa Cum Laude from Temple University Tyler School of Art. Her work includes paintings, drawings, prints, photography, and site specific installations that explore the role of mysticism and mythology in our everyday lives. This is the third installation Rankin has prepared for PMG.

El dia de los muertos, the Day of the Dead, is a Latin American holiday connected to indigenous traditions and the Catholic holidays of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day. People gather in a number of ways to pray for, remember, and honor deceased family and friends. PMG will be hosting two more Day of the Dead activities; Family Jams: Ofrenda and Day of the Dead Crafts on October 9 and a two-day Paper Mache Workshop with Joel Garcia on October 29 and 30. No matter your age or heritage, join our PMG community as we celebrate Dias de muertos in three special ways.
The Music & Mosaics Concert Series is Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens’ BYOB concert series held every fourth Saturday of the month from March to October. Concerts feature local artists of every style, from bossa nova to bluegrass and take place at PMG located at 1020 South Street.
