The African-American Unemployment Crisis Continues

The American labor market continued its steady recovery in October, as the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed that the economy added 171,000 jobs last month. The nation’s unemployment rate is now 7.9 percent, and there is an unquestionable recovery taking place. Lost in the positive news, though, is that the unemployment rate for African-Americans rose nearly a full point to 14.3 percent, up from 13.4 percent in September.
The black unemployment rate has fallen from its Great Recession peak of 16.7 percent, but it’s at the same level it was in October 2011, even though the nation’s overall unemployment rate has fallen more than a full point since then. As this chart from The Roosevelt Institute’s Mike Konczal shows, black unemployment averaged 8.6 percent before the recession:

  • ” No Aqua for me”

    Here is an interesting experience, from which all travelers might benefit and even have a good laugh. I recall this one trip when I had travelled alone and I happened to choose Cancun, Mexico for a last minute get-away.
    I admit that I didn’t know the language beyond a few key phrases to acknowledge the locals beyond a smile. At times during the week I had felt out of sorts being in a foreign country with no one to talk with so one afternoon I ventured into town.
    As I explored the village of locals away from where the tourists’ ventured I decided to go into a small hair salon to have a few highlights put into my hair. It never occured to me that anything could even remotely go wrong. Well, as I was sitting there with all of the bleach on my head and beginning to feel it burning my scalp what had seemed like forever suddenly turned into a moment of sheer 9-1-1 emergency panic. There was no one to call for help.
    Everything began to happen all at once; the lady who owned the shop took me over to the bowl to rinse the burning scalp when she began to shout “NO AQUA” while the other patrons and staff members chanted in shifts real loud at the top of their lungs. Well naturally, by this time I went into a full fledged anxiety attack draped with cape and all proceeded out the front door exiting onto the street yelling with the others ” NO AQUA”hoping for someone to come to my aid. No one came for what seemed like eternity. My head was on fire.
    It was quite a scene. Everyone was out on the streets yelling“NO AQUA” and my relief finally came when someone nearby had an emergency bucket of “AQUA” to put out the fire on my head. Picture this scene: Here I am running around with that plastic cap and this huge white no-frills plastic apron flying around the shop and quickly into street of locals.
    It was hysterical looking back but at the time I didn’t find it too amusing. So if you ever think that you’re having a bad hair day think again and be glad for what you have. I found out that I prefer natural hair than to toasted or fried. Thank you very much. My memory doesn’ t serve me but I ‘m certain that I paid for the service and I must say in more ways than one since it only took forever to get my hair’s texture back to semi- normal rather than semi -fried. My advice to you traveling into Mexico is not only to not drink the water but bring some extra AQUA if you ever decide to have your hair done. Adios to my friends in Cancun , Mexico…and until we meet again I am staying au natural. God speed everyone.

    History Of Philadelphia Subway System


    Another major transit link in West Philadelphia are the five [[SEPTA Subway-Surface Trolley Lines|Subway Surface Lines]], often called the Green Lines for their representation on SEPTA route maps. These include five of Philadelphia's remaining six streetcar lines. Combined, these trolley routes convey more than 150,000 passengers daily, and operate 24-hour schedules, even in blizzards.

    The [[SEPTA Route 10|Route 10]] trolley runs along [[Lancaster Pike|Lancaster Avenue]] from 63rd and Malvern Avenue through to 36th and Ludlow Streets where a portal allows access to the subway tunnel into Center City. The [[SEPTA Route 34|Route 34]] trolley runs along [[Baltimore Pike|Baltimore Avenue]] from [[Cobbs Creek]] at 61st Street to the transit tunnel at 40th Street in [[University City, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania|University City]]. The [[SEPTA Route 13|Route 13]] trolley runs along Chester Avenue from the transit tunnel at 40th Street and Baltimore Avenue to 67th Street where it turns off Chester Avenue and continues along PA Route 13 into [[Yeadon, Pennsylvania|Yeadon, Delaware County]] on to its terminus at Green Lane. The [[SEPTA Route 11|Route 11]] trolley runs long Woodland Avenue from the transit tunnel at 40th street through to the city line at [[Cobbs Creek]] and continues into [[Darby, Pennsylvania|Darby Borough]]. The final Green Line is the [[SEPTA Route 36|Route 36]] trolley, the longest and furthest south. The 36 trolley leaves the transit tunnel, runs along Woodland Avenue to 49th Street, and turns south to continue along Lindbergh Boulevard until 55th Street when it splits off with Elmwood Avenue. It continues westbound on Elmwood until it turns south on Island Avenue west of 73rd Street, and continues south until its terminus in Penrose Plaza in [[Southwest Philadelphia]], near the [[Philadelphia International Airport]].

    Initially, two other trolley lines, the Route 38 trolley which ran from Wynnefield to Center City via Belmont Avenue and Mantua, and the Route 31 trolley, which ran from the city line in
    Overbrook Park via Haverford Avenue and Market Street into Center City we to be diverted into the transit tunnel at Ludlow Street. But after [[National City Lines]] took over the [[Philadelphia Transit Company]], those plans were scrapped and the routes converted to diesel buses. As well, Route 38 was expanded into newly developed neighborhoods in Bala Cynwyd, and the Route 31 diverted into a circuitous route through West Philadelphia and Mantua.

    Love Is A Bridge

    You have probably seen a bridge before; haven’t you? Well bridges are usually there with a purpose. A bridge will get you to the other side of somewhere if you choose to take it. Or you can use another way. You can always justify why you need to go another way; its shorter, quicker, easier or I just felt like it; the scenery is better or whatever. When a bridge is neglected it usually shows up in appearance or performance.
    If you aren’t aware :) ...(here’s a clue)...  I am writing metaphorically referring to the bridges in your life. We all have them. Some people choose to try and carry the wreckage of their past within. Sometimes the weight of the past catches up and will weigh you down. Nobody else needs to know. Do you have a bridge (your own or someone elses’) that affected your life a long time ago that you are still trying to patch up or carry with you? We all do. Did you forget all about it? Your subconscious didn’t. It just got buried somewhere in your soul. Out of sight out of mind. Not really. It doesn’t work that way.
    The power of the past can either make you better or make you better. 
    You can choose to face it or run like hell. It will always catch up with your insides at some point in time. Life is like a highway with lots of detours to get us to be able to see ourselves and one another clearer and with love. Life can help us to face our true selves which isn’t always pretty like the faces we show one another until we get to the other side to see the beauty in the broken places where we can cross the bridge and get to “the peaceful place within.”
